10 bathtub designs with wow factor

From designs that emulate rippling water and shapes inspired by hammocks to ‘living’ finishes, KBB journo Vicki Evans discovers how your tub can be so much more than a plain white box…

A few years ago, I was at a press event for the launch of an enormous bath, which I nicknamed ‘The Rockstar’ (after the name of a Nickelback song with the lyrics, “And a king-size tub, big enough for 10 plus me”). The idea of baths having personalities has been with me ever since.

Recently, I’ve noticed an increase in bathtub designs that fit within this category perfectly – from ones that showcase immense individuality through their size or shape to those exuding character and charm thanks to their materials and finishes.

These bathtub designs may not be the most cost-effective or family-friendly, but they’re not trying to be. They’re striking solutions created to command attention, encapsulate opulence, and perhaps even leave you a little starstruck. So, what will you call yours?

1. Dark and moody

Rexa’s Cava bath was created by Studio Monica Graffeo, a prolific Italian designer, and is inspired by a traditional amphora jug – a storage jar used by ancient Greeks. The softness of the shape is contrasted with the dark and moody Nero Marquina black marble, which brings all the drama. Beautifully versatile, this could work in any aesthetic – from an industrial-style space to a more classic-contemporary look.

2. Luxurious bathtub designs

Oozing opulence, Lusso‘s Lamp bath was designed in-house by the brand’s founder and CEO Wayne Spriggs, and, as revealed in its name, is heavily inspired by a lamp silhouette. Finely handcrafted from Italian Arabescato marble – with a surface of striking smoky grey hues – a design like this deserves to take centre stage in a bathroom.

3. On a wave

Can’t you just picture yourself drifting on gentle waves of relaxation in Victoria + Albert Baths’ Seros tub? Co-designed by British sculptor Sophie-Elizabeth Thompson, the bath’s fluid forms – and the way these play with light and shadow – mimic the energy and movement of rippling water. Its nature-inspired shape means it would be perfect for a Scandinavian or Japanese-inspired bathroom.

4. Pretty and precious

If you want a bath that takes on its own unique identity over the years, then choose one with an organic finish, like this Bateau bath in Weathered Brass from Catchpole & Rye. Simply request for it not to be lacquered if you want a living finish that will naturally patina over time – creating a charm and look like no other. What better way to add personality?

5. Fun fluting

Some may say Nôsa’s Chloe resembles a pool rather than a bath. Irresistibly indulgent, its commanding 150cm size and round shape means it’s ideal for sharing – so perfect for a super-sized ensuite. Crafted to retain heat for extended soaks, you’ll never want to leave.

6. Soaking bathtub designs

Escape to Asia in your own home with the help of a traditional Japanese soaking bath, such as the Aquatica True Ofuro Nano bath. The tub has an extra deep design that allows for a fully supported bathing experience, ideal for relaxation and back health. Why not incorporate biophilic elements and other natural materials, for a real tranquil Onsen-esque space?

7. Wood baths

Traditional Japanese Ofuro baths have inspired the Geo teak bath by William Garvey. The Ofuro is traditionally a steep-sided wooden bathtub used in the Japanese ritual of bathing, not meant for washing, but rather warming and relaxing oneself – which we could all do a little more of, couldn’t we?

8. Boutique hotel-style designs

Aquaroc’s Bijou bath has fully embraced the fluting trend and taken it to a whole new level. It features a soft, tapered shape, with deep and defined tactile texture following the natural line of the bath. Its insulating properties keep the water warm for longer, allowing you to savour every moment, while its contemporary design effortlessly blends with various décor styles.

9. Modern and luxurious

Need a place for your wine during your bath? (Don’t we all?) Designed by Philippe Starck, Axor’s Suite bath features a practical polished nickel shelf offering just that, while its simple oval shape and grooved rim add a modern twist to a classic design. Complete the look with brassware from the same collection for a seamless aesthetic.

10. Next-level baths

Yes, this is a bath – we promise. Splinterworks’ Hamaca bathtub brings the relaxation of being suspended in a hammock into your bathroom. Crafted from carbon fibre, the sleek design offers full-body support for ultimate comfort. Plus, the ergonomic shape and variable depth mean you actually use less water than a standard bath.
