Are you planning a bedroom makeover but don’t know which shade to pick for your new colour scheme? Navy has the power to transform your space into a restful retreat thanks to its sophisticated yet dramatic allure.
Whether you want to create a classic look or something more modern, dark blue is an incredibly versatile shade – you can create anything from a luxurious, moody sanctuary and a breezy, coastal-inspired space to a boutique hotel boudoir.
What’s more, according to experts and colour psychology, dark blue is believed to have calming properties while also evoking a sense of stability. “For those who love the sophisticated and soothing vibe of navy, incorporating this shade into your bedroom decor can transform it into a stylish sanctuary, perfect for unwinding and rejuvenating,” explains Leah Aspinall, head of design at Blinds 2go.
So, how can you use dark blue in your bedroom?
This shade pairs beautifully with a variety of materials and accents – think sumptuous velvet or polished brass – so it suits a range of bedroom styles. “We love to play with dark and moody schemes in the bedroom,” says Jamie Watkins, co-founder of Divine Savages. If you’re ready to fully embrace this hue, consider painting your walls (ceiling included) in this rich hue or adding depth and texture to your space with patterned wallpaper. Jamie recommends mixing daring wallcoverings and sumptuous fabrics with contrasting gold accents for a glamorous twist.
Plus, there are so many striking colour combinations that make dark blue sing. Molly Freshwater, co-founder and creative director of Secret Linen Store, advises pairing white and navy to achieve a coastal look that feels bright and airy.
“For something more masculine, try it with shades of grey and tan accessories, or my favourite way to use it – colour drenching,” she adds.
However, if you’re unsure about going all out on this shade, why not start small by updating your soft furnishings and accessories? Dark blue throw pillows, blankets, bed linen, rugs or curtains are ideal for effortlessly adding a pop of this dramatic shade into your room.
It’s also worth noting that if you have a compact bedroom, a dark shade could make it appear smaller in size. Fear not – by painting the ceiling, you can achieve a cocooning effect, perfect for a soothing sleep space.
