How to buy bold and beautiful kitchen appliances

Whether you want a new countertop toaster or a grand range cooker, colourful appliances are a great way to add personality and distinctive style to your kitchen. KBB journo Sally Smith has gathered the latest models and helpful buying tips…

First, how do you find the right colour, you ask? Take inspiration from other shades in adjacent rooms to create a cohesive feel – it could be anything from your sofa, your walls or even a favourite cushion. If you want something that will stand the test of time, a soft ‘accent’ colour would be a good choice for your new appliance.

Pastel shades such as lighter greens, blues or even pinks coordinate well with most kitchen cabinetry and will add a complementary tone to the scheme. However, if you are looking to add a real standout piece, look for vibrant reds, oranges or deep purples.

Whatever the colourful kitchen appliance you choose, don’t be tempted to compromise on the specification of the appliance, as you’ll only regret it in the long run. Decide on the ideal model in terms of the latest functionality and specification you need first and then look at the colour range on offer. An increasing number of brands are introducing a much more extensive range of shades as standard.

How much do colourful kitchen appliances cost?

An entry-level countertop appliance such as an ice cream maker can be around £140. Or, if you are a keen baker, a stylish stand mixer will be around £300 to £700. A range cooker in one of the standard ranges of eight or ten colours will be upwards of £2000 to £4000 depending on the size.

Some manufacturers offer a bespoke RAL colour match option, but expect to pay around £1000 for this service and account for longer lead times for delivery.

Buying tips

There may well be longer lead times if you go bespoke, but it will be worth the wait to get the right colourful appliance for your kitchen. If you are tempted by the latest on-trend shades, choose carefully – as it may not be the best option for your scheme, and you’re more likely to regret it.

Look out for matching cooker hoods and range cookers to really make a bold statement in the kitchen. And if you’re really not sure which colour to choose, start small by first committing to a countertop appliance in the colour you crave.

Go bespoke

If you want a colourful kitchen appliance that blends perfectly with your kitchen cabinetry, some brands – especially range cooker and hood brands – offer bespoke services, where you can choose from more than 200 RAL colours in a matt or gloss finish.

Sourcing colour swatches is a great idea, as you’ll be able to get a feel for how the appliance will look alongside worktops, cabinetry and flooring before you make a decision. It is always a good idea to stick to the same appliance manufacturer if you can, as this will maintain a consistent look.
