What type of bedding is best for summer?

Summed bedding solutions

In the market for summer bedding? We’re breaking down the key considerations for purchasing your new set.

With new, crisp bed linen, you can effortlessly elevate the look and feel of your bedroom. But with balmy days approaching, what type is best for summer? “The right summer bedding can make all the difference between tossing and turning or drifting off into a perfectly breezy night’s sleep,” says Molly Freshwater, co-founder and creative director at Secret Linen Store.

So, from materials to colourways, make sure your new solution ticks off these boxes before you buy it…

Cheatsheet for summer bedding

When shopping for new bed linen, breathability is key, says Jessica Hanley, founder and CEO of Piglet in Bed. Look at natural materials such as organic cotton and tactile linen, which will aid in a restful night’s sleep.

“I’d always opt for natural, lightweight fabrics like linen or cotton percale – they’re soft, moisture-wicking, and help regulate your body temperature on warm nights,” explains Jessica. “Linen is particularly breathable owing to its natural long fibres that allow the air to circulate through and around the fabric, and in turn keeps you cool.”

It’s also important to pay attention to the colourway of your new bedding set – light hues are ideal for this time of the year. “We love bright colours and patterns, but there’s something about neutrals and shades like white, blue and soft blush which don’t just look fresh – they also reflect heat instead of absorbing it. A simple colour swap can make your whole bedroom feel cooler and more serene,” says Molly. Jessica agrees and adds, “It’s all about creating a sleep environment that feels fresh, comfortable, and effortlessly cool.”

And, if you love a bolder look, there are also many mood-boosting prints in pared-back shades to choose from. Think dainty florals, playful pastel gingham, and stylish stripes. “Florals are the quintessential choice for summer bedrooms. Their light, airy aesthetic brings the outdoors in, creating a fresh and uplifting atmosphere that aligns perfectly with the season’s mood and energy,” says Shelley Cochrane, accessories buyer at Furniture Village.
