20 ways to create a colourful bathroom

From striking tile combinations and modern vanities to statement sanitaryware and charming wallpaper patterns, there are so many different ways of embracing colour in your bathroom. We look at the latest ways of sprucing up your space using daring shades…

Wonder wall

The trend for wallpapering the bathroom isn’t going anywhere, with designers and homeowners alike using it to inject pattern and colour into a bathroom scheme. Whether you go wall-to-wall for maximum impact in a powder room or a more practical panelling-and-paper combo in a family bathroom, it’s a great way to liven up your space.

Look for moisture-resistant designs or, if you’re using regular wallpaper, give it two coats of clear decorator’s varnish to protect it and avoid using it in areas where it’ll come into direct contact with water. Poppy Ashworth, interiors expert at Graham & Brown, recommends using an adhesive with a fungicide in it and ensuring the room is well-ventilated before you get rolling.

Colourful bathroom basins

Right now, it’s all about investing in a showstopping basin to add a sophisticated pop of colour to your bathroom design. Holm, Kast’s latest basin collection, is a joyous fusion of concrete and on-trend terrazzo – shown is the Mesa design in Mineral. The collection isn’t just about good looks either. The stone insert discreetly hides the basin waste from view for a clean, minimalist vibe, and it can also be removed for easy cleaning.

Suite dreams

Coloured bathroom suites have come a long way since the 1970s, as designer Christian Werner proves with his latest collection for Duravit. Perfect for adding the wow factor to smaller ensuites and cloakrooms, the Vitrium collection includes three rich shades – Greenblue, Parlour Blue and Cinnamon, alongside three neutrals.

The colour-matched lacquered wood furniture and DuroCast sanitaryware both have an easy-clean, velvety matt finish that’s both durable and stylish.

Tickled pink

Not content with classic black or brass fixtures, homeowners are demanding brighter lighting for their bathrooms – quite literally – with pink being a top choice. Houseof’s number one bestseller is the IP44-rated Pink 3 Light flush ceiling light, £249. Plus, the brand has just launched a new range with interior designer Emma Gurner. The new Pleat wall and flush ceiling light, £199, with its Burnt Orange and Powder Pink colour combo, will complete any bold bathroom.

Colourful bathroom sanitaryware

We love designer Zoe Willis’ contemporary take on the current trend for maximalist cloakrooms – she transformed this tiny space in a mid-century villa in Poole into a Memphis mecca. Channelling the design aesthetic of the 80s characterised by brightly coloured graphic shapes and graphic lines, Zoe used Hovia‘s Memphis-inspired Carlton wallpaper as the backdrop to her bold design. It also has a statement pink WC from Trone as the focal point.

Into the blue

Sky Blue is a hot shade of 2024. So, it’s perhaps no surprise that Roper Rhodes has introduced the Concierge vanity unit in its best-selling colourway Coniston Blue. We love the furniture’s modern take on the Shaker style, making it a versatile addition to any bathroom. The Concierge includes three storage drawers, plus one or two tall pull-out drawers in the larger models.

Tie-dye

Drawing on the ancient Japanese art of tie-dyeing, Fired Earth’s new Shibori tile collection was created together with homeware and textile powerhouse Designers Guild. The striking design is made from hardwearing porcelain that can even be used outdoors as it’s frostproof. Use in one area of the bathroom, such as a shower enclosure, to create an eye-catching backdrop without overwhelming the space.

Colourful bathroom taps

Get a daily dopamine hit with these funky faucets from Roca. The stripped-back design by Studio Inma Bermúdez gives these taps a sleek, timeless look and stops them from feeling gimmicky. The Nu collection features three different handles – Pin, Dome and Stripes. All are available in six glossy Mediterranean-inspired shades, from zingy lemon and grass green to a deep cobalt blue.

Textural healing

If you’re loving the slat wall trend, look no further than Cosentino’s new Dekton Ukiyo range developed by interior designer Claudia Afshar. In an easy-to-install 45x30cm tile format, the fluted surface is designed for vertical cladding, making it a durable and fuss-free option for adding texture to a shower enclosure or behind a freestanding bath. The collection comes in five colourways: Bromo, Kreta, Nacre, Umber, and Rem.

Add stripes

For a quick bathroom update and an instant splash of colour, check out John Lewis’ latest range of bathroom accessories. We love the nostalgic vibe of the Anyday towel collection, with its 1930s deckchair-inspired stripes in three bold shades: Cobalt, Burnt Orange and Jadeite.

Colourful bathroom vanities

Whether you’re upcycling an existing piece of furniture or choosing a bespoke design, an easy and affordable way to make a statement is with a bold accent paint colour. We love the eco-friendly paint range from YesColours, including this vibrant orange. It pops against a neutral backdrop while the blue-framed mirrors create a nice contrast.

Colourful bathroom mirrors

We know scallops are a thing, but we adore this subtle take on the trend from Studio HÁM, making it more of a timeless investment piece. The HÁM scalloped edge mirror, £995, is handmade and designed in the UK, available to order in any flat colour paint finish you choose. We love how it’s colour-matched to the Reeded Lion Paw vanity unit.

A thirst for colour

Drink in Claybrook’s new kaleidoscopic tile collections, with the Quench offering 14 delectable shades, each named after a cocktail, and Cornucopia comprising six terrazzo-style designs. Both collections are stocked in a 60x60cm format and are made from hard-wearing porcelain, making them ideal for covering large, high-traffic areas.

Hot seat

More akin to a sculptural piece of art than a bog-standard loo (pun intended), the studio behind Bocchi‘s new Fenice collection, Danelon Meroni Design, has nailed the balance between form and function with this striking yet elegant WC. With bidet functionality and a rimless design for ultimate hygiene and easy cleaning, the Fenice WC. It also comes in 20 different colourways.

Lavender haze

Some viewed it as a bit left-field, but ever since WGSN and Coloro introduced Digital Lavender as its Colour of the Year in 2023, this vibrant shade has continued to dominate the world of interiors. It looks best as an accent shade, so choose smaller accessories for a surprise pop of colour.

Colourful shower curtains

After falling out of favour, the shower curtain is having a bit of a comeback. Playful patterned designs and bold stripes will instantly elevate your bathroom design and allow you to experiment with textures and colours that can easily be updated later if you’re reluctant to commit to big-ticket items in a bold shade.

Modern twist

String Furniture has long been a Scandinavian design staple of the storage world, celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. But this classic piece has had a contemporary update. It is available in a fun range of eye-popping hues inspired by the 70s, perfect for jazzing up your bathroom. So beautiful!

Colour splash

The paintable bath concept is not new. However, designs have been relatively limited to the traditional rolltop – until now. We love the imposing cast-iron Lambeth bath with its panel detailing. It comes primed as standard to be painted any colour of choice.

The perfect match

Up until now, shower enclosures had been relatively limited to metallic finishes. But say hello to Sonas’s new colour-coordinated wetroom panels! Available in nine top-selling colours for 2024, the enclosures match the brand’s vanity units for a sleek, cohesive look.
