Depending on the positioning of your shower (in terms of plumbing accessibility and space available to play with), you can start to narrow down the options which best suit your layout – do you need a fully enclosed solution or a sleek panel? “A flawless fit starts with millimetre-perfect measurements. Think height, width, and space to breathe,” advises Eileen Slattery, marketing director at Merlyn. “Your retailer, plumber or installer will be able to help you with this.”

Whether you’re redoing your setup from scratch or your existing solution needs an upgrade, there are many styles of shower screens and enclosures to choose from. Think quadrant, square, rectangular, and pentagon, with hinged, sliding, and bi-fold doors, or even sleek frameless panel designs. So, how do you choose the right one? As a general guideline, Eileen recommends quadrants for corners, rectangular enclosures for statement spaces, and walk-in panels for a seamless, spa-like look.

Aside from shapes and sizes, glass thickness and quality are also key considerations, says Nicholas Cunild, managing director at Matki. “At Matki, most of our shower enclosures are made with glass that is 8-10mm thick, which gives your enclosure a luxurious feel and superior stability,” he explains. The glass itself can also be selected in a wealth of different colours and finishes, such as bronzed glass, fluted glass or mesh glass.”

In terms of finishes, you can choose from sleek matts and bold metallics such as brushed brass, gunmetal, and copper. “Your frame sets the tone for the entire bathroom, so it is very important,” adds Eileen. For a cohesive look, make sure to coordinate your screen or enclosure with your bathroom’s hardware and brassware, from handles and hinges, to taps and shower controls.
