Hygge bedroom ideas for a cosy and cocooning atmosphere
Posted on 18th November 2024
The Danish concept of hygge (pronounced ‘hoo-gah’) is a way of life that’s become more popular in the UK over the last years, despite it originating back in the 18th century.
What is the aim of hygge? To achieve deep contentment in your soul while letting go of the busy world around you – something that many of us can probably get on board with. Now, it’s said that this contentment can be derived from practising simple comforts – whether it’s the feeling of cosiness you get from being wrapped up snugly in a blanket or the satisfaction from enjoying good food. But how does this translate to your bedroom?
KBB journo Laurie Davidson has looked at how you can adapt the principles of this Danish lifestyle practice into your own bedroom design…
In this hygge bedroom, layered rugs and plenty of blankets and cushions create a cosy feel. The Abigail Ahern curtain in Nola Camo from Hillarys, starting from £176, adds another layer of softness to the scheme.
Easy ways of designing a hygge bedroom
To begin with, it’s important to prioritise that feeling of cosiness with your furnishings, using lots of touchy-feely materials – and not just in the winter. Layering soft bedding and chunky knit or textured throws, for example, will evoke a comforting, inviting atmosphere that you’ll want to relax in, as will adding rugs to hard flooring to soften the effect.
This Luxury Linen king duvet cover drenched in a warming barley shade, £245, from Cox & Cox is perfect for keeping warm during the colder months.
Then there’s the colour palette; soothing, earthy colours are ideal for creating a hygge environment in your bedroom – nothing too stark or cold. With comfort the order of the day, look at your bed headboard to ensure it’s a comfy backdrop to sit up against, if you like to enjoy a morning cuppa in bed or some night-time reading. Plenty of plump cushions will help create a hygge bedroom, too.
Soft lighting is essential – avoid bright ceiling lights and go for a mix of lamps instead, with warm white bulbs. Finish by nurturing yourself with a self-care nighttime routine to melt away the day’s stresses as soon as you enter your bedroom, and be sure to get some solitude and a good night’s sleep.
