Charming kitchen curtain ideas to elevate your design

Did you hear? Curtains are making a comeback! Completely retro, yet utterly practical and aesthetically pleasing in modern interiors, we’re exploring how you can welcome this fabric-based trend in your kitchen…

From country-chic sink skirts to dramatic bed canopies and airy shower curtains, this fun furnishing is weaving its way back into contemporary interiors. Whether it’s an inspirational image on Instagram or a homeowner’s real project, it seems I’m seeing fabrics used as statement features everywhere. Which got me wondering – could the curtain truly be back?

I reached out to the experts to find out, and the answer was a resounding ‘yes’. “Curtains are definitely back,” Tori Murphy, founder of the eponymous British textile brand, tells me. “They are so practical and versatile.”

So, let’s explore some of the latest kitchen curtain ideas…

How can you use curtains in your kitchen beyond window dressing?

In the kitchen, I learnt that curtains are a great way of concealing unwanted items, such as pots and pans, or hiding unappealing storage nooks while still keeping your essentials on hand. “Cupboard curtains – or ‘skirtains’ as they’re often referred to – are a growing trend in modern kitchen design,” says Yvonne Keal, product specialist at window dressing manufacturer and retailer Hillarys.

A piece of fabric takes up far less space when compared to a classic cupboard door, thus making it ideal for smaller kitchens or compact spaces such as walk-in pantries and utility rooms.

If you’re looking to take these kitchen curtain ideas to the next level, why not replace the door to a secondary storage room with statement fabric? This way you can maximise space, ensure easy access, and add personality to your design.

Lauren L. Caron, designer and founder of Studio Laloc, recommends using curtains to keep undercounter appliances such as mini-fridges, or even waste bins, out of sight, as well as to add softness to glass cabinet doors.

Have fun with your design

Although often considered traditional or quaint, Louisa Tratalos, founder of bespoke fabric and wallpaper brand Colours of Arley, says fabric skirts are anything but twee. “Go for a modern fabric such as a bold stripe in a bright colourway to add a fresh take on an old-time trend. It offsets the sterile or natural materials in a kitchen by adding an element of playfulness.”

If you, like me, are now captivated by curtains, know that depending on the look you want to achieve, you can play with a myriad of shades, patterns and textures. For example, gingham prints and dainty florals are ideal for infusing your space with country charm while stripe patterns are more modern.
