It may seem unimportant, but if you leave it until the last minute to decide where to put your kitchen necessities such as the cleaning equipment, you’ll soon find your layout falls apart…
Over the last few years, Instagram has seen the rise in popularity of cleaning influencers like Lynsey Queen of Clean and Mrs Hinch Home. Popular posts on the topic include cleaning hacks, and also beautifully organised kitchens and utility rooms with cleaning products arranged neatly in glass jars.
The dream, right? Well, to offer advice on where to best place your cleaning must-haves and bring you inspiration on the available options, KBB journo Francesca Seden has put this handy guide together…
Create a dedicated space
Whether you’re lucky enough to have a utility room or not, having a dedicated space, or spaces, for cleaning products and accessories is a good idea. “This could be a tall broom larder as your cleaning cupboard,” says Sophie Devonald, designer at Crown Imperial, “with a mix of versatile shelving and open storage to accommodate bulkier items such as a vacuum cleaner.” You might also consider keeping cleaning products in caddies which are stocked with whatever you need for particular jobs.
Where to place your kitchen cleaning equipment
In terms of placement, you should consider putting cleaning products near to where they are most frequently used to enhance efficiency. “For example, dishwasher tablets and rinse aids are best kept in a cupboard or drawer near the dishwasher, while general cleaning sprays and cloths work well under the sink,” says Tom Howley, creative design director at eponymous kitchen brand.
“Innovations such as soft-close, pull-out racks and integrated lighting within cupboards help make these spaces more functional and user-friendly,” he adds.
And, if you have a separate utility room, this is the ideal place for laundry care appliances and products, the ironing board and iron, plus any cleaning products and accessories you might not immediately need at hand in the main kitchen.
