How to match your ensuite design to your bedroom like a pro

Need inspiration for creating a seamless, stylish and statement bedroom-bathroom scheme? Then look no further than these dreamy ensuite designs…

From cottage-chic to modern and minimalist, KBB journo Charlotte Luxford chatted to the designers behind these gorgeous, real projects to offer you some ideas on creating a cohesive link between your bedroom and bathroom…

Restful ensuite design

Keen hosts, the owners of this substantial Hampshire home commissioned Otta Design to create five cosy and characterful guest suites. “We wanted the occupants to be able to sink into a deep, restorative sleep, so we used Edward Bulmer’s Vert de Mer on the walls – a lovely sea blue that is rich and nurturing without feeling overbearing,” says Alex Keith, director at Otta Design.

The tone of blue was carried through into the ensuite, through the use of the glazed metro tiles on the walls and the patterned floor tiles. “A top tip is to use a larger-pattern tile on the floor to stop a room from feeling too long and narrow,” reveals Alex.

Bold accents of mustard also appear in the bedroom, and deep aubergine hues add richness and drama to the bathroom. “The bath and vanity are painted in this timeless shade and it was also added through the inset trim on the roman blinds – a small, inexpensive detail that unifies the scheme.”

Romantic cottage

The owners of Major House, a rental cottage in Pembrokeshire, tasked interior designer Grace King of Studio Rey to design a master suite that was calm and luxurious with a ‘romantic charm’. “We enveloped the walls and ceiling in the bedroom in a soft pink lilac and paired that with a deep violet grey on the panelling behind the bed for a moody contrast,” explains Grace.

As the ensuite was a compact space, Grace used the same pink colour for the walls in the bathroom to create a seamless transition, while the shower nook features tiles in a dark-violet hue to reference the panelled wall in the bedroom.

The steps leading to the lower-level bathroom, and the flooring of the ensuite, have a subtle speckled pattern so as not to overwhelm the space while also tying in with the bedroom carpet. Lastly, Grace opted for wall-mounted sanitaryware. The cistern and pipework for the WC are hidden in a low-level wall to avoid clutter and to provide a handy shelf for bathroom items.

Escapist retreat

Kildrummy Inn, nestled in the scenic Aberdeenshire countryside, has been reimagined as an intimate retreat, blending traditional charm with modern luxury. Originally established in 1828, this family-run inn underwent an extensive renovation by Joelle Reid Interiors to transform its four luxury suites into escapist sanctuaries.

The ensuites at Kildrummy Inn ooze charm and a sense of luxury.

“For this one, we wanted to create something rich, cosy and country – but luxurious,” says Joelle. “My client loves Cole & Son wallpapers, so the dark navy and antique gold paper was the starting point and set the tone for the rest of the suite.”

The bed canopy adds drama, and Joelle sourced local materials including Johnstons of Elgin wool sateen, for an elegant, authentic Scottish feel.

Here, the ensuite bathroom was carefully curated to complement its adjoining bedroom. A moody palette of antique brass fixtures, Victorian-inspired tiles and rich wood finishes creates a seamless flow. “We used a lot of semi-fitted and freestanding pieces in the bathrooms for a traditional feel, and Drummonds were able to match the brass colour perfectly to all the other antique brass finishes in the suite for a cohesive look.”
