With the help of interior design studio Broomside Design, Alex and Kieran Simpson created a pretty and practical kitchen, perfect for cooking and entertaining. Let’s take a closer look and find out more about this transformation…
The brief
“This was actually the second kitchen we designed and installed for this couple,” says Gary Short, owner of Broomside Design. “They wanted to transition from their previous classic framed Shaker style to a more contemporary, minimalist design that would complement their new home style and décor. Our goal was to create a cohesive space that felt warm and homely, in line with current design trends.”
The kitchen design
Gary picked two ranges from STORI, which complement each other both in terms of colours and style. The dark Rezana doors have an organic Espresso-stained woodgrain finish, which brings depth and richness to the room, grounding the space. The full-height cabinetry offers ample storage space for organising a wide range of kitchen essentials – from cooking must-haves to miscellaneous utensils.
“The homeowners had contrasting views on their desired tones. Kieran initially sought a deeper shade like Hacienda Black or Carbon, while Alex preferred the softer tones of Espresso and Weathered Silver. Ultimately, the more minimalist style of Zola Matte in Taupe Grey complemented Rezana perfectly,” explains Gary.
The calm, contemporary tone of the Zola Matte slab doors in Taupe Grey provides a subtle contrast to the deeper stained doors, allowing the rich brown to remain the focal point without feeling overpowering.
Equipped with a floating shelf for easy access to plates and spices, statement surfaces, an integrated sink, and a brass tap, the sink area is equally functional and aesthetically pleasing.
The layout
The kitchen is laid out in a classic L shape with a central island. The waterfall island features luxurious veined surfaces and a built-in induction hob. Complete with pendant lights and bar stools, it is an efficient zone for preparing meals, casual dining, and entertaining guests.
“Once we settled on a layout that worked, we focused on refining every detail of the design. This included planning internal storage solutions, selecting countertop details, and creatively concealing the doors to the pantry and utility room to maintain a cohesive look. Each element was carefully considered to ensure it met the homeowners’ needs while aligning with their vision for the space,” says Gary.
The details
Here comes the element of surprise – adjacent to the kitchen, the bespoke floor-to-ceiling doors reveal a hidden pantry and a utility area. Tucked away are many of the homeowners’ larger appliances and everyday items, helping to maintain a minimalist-chic, clutter-free appearance.
“We faced spatial challenges from multiple doorways and sought to minimise their impact. By incorporating hidden doors into both the pantry and utility areas, we managed to maintain the desired look and feel of the kitchen,” explains Gary.
This contemporary kitchen by Broomside Design is the winner of STORI’s 2024 Top Real Stories competition. “When I founded the business, my goal was never to be the busiest but to be the best, focusing on a design-led and service-driven model. Winning this title is a truly proud moment for us. After being finalists for the past two years, we hoped to achieve a hat-trick this year,” says Gary.
