Just like the tasty array of olive varieties you can find scattered on any good tapas board, there are as many green undertones to choose from for your new kitchen.

Green is one of the most popular choices when it comes to kitchen colours, and it’s set to stay firmly on trend into 2025, too. “As a colour, we associate primarily with nature, green has an incredible way of reconnecting us with our surroundings, creating moments of calm and positivity,” says Nina Anastasopoulou, designer at Tom Howley. But today, we’re honing in on olive.

This sumptuous shade has light and dark undertones, just like the real fruit does – from dark and smoky to light and pared-back. So, if you’re tempted by this eye-catching shade, KBB journo Rosie Smith has asked the experts why you should embrace it and how you can make it work…

The beauty of olive green kitchens

What makes olive a great option for your cabinetry makeover? “Striking olive-toned greens, in particular, have an earthiness and depth that leave you feeling nourished and full of life, perfect for your culinary hub,” says Nina.

From grand open-plan layouts to compact schemes, this colour works well in a range of kitchen sizes – and styles, from modern handleless to classic Shaker. “The natural, earthy tones in olive create a neutral colour palette that’s warm, cosy and most importantly timeless. It works great for big and small kitchens alike as it is so versatile,” notes Nadine Chadwick of Nolte Kitchens.

How can you welcome olive green into your space? “In larger kitchen spaces, opt for incorporating olive green on a freestanding island to create an interesting focal point,” recommends Fred Horlock, design director at Neptune. “For smaller kitchens, consider using the colour throughout the entire space, leaning into a cosy and intimate feel. Black hardware works particularly well with an olive green colour scheme, adding contrast and character to the space.”

It is a versatile hue, so you can mix it with different colourways such as warm neutrals, pale pinks, moody forest greens, navy, and even black. “You can pair it with creams and off-whites to create a classic, inviting space that feels light and airy without feeling too clinical, or black for a modern and sleek look – it even looks great paired with bright blues or plush pinks for a more fun, zoned kitchen area,” adds Nadine.

When it comes to finishes, pair it with natural materials like timber or warm metallics, advises Jayne Everett, creative designer at Naked Kitchens. “Olive looks fabulous in a contemporary style and works well to update a more traditional design. An uplifting colour that is here to stay,” she says.
