Buying tips

Think about where your washing machines and dryers will best fit in the layout and, if you are renovating, consider designing a utility space. There are stylishly designed laundry appliances on the market that will complement your kitchen design, or you can opt for integrated models to achieve a seamless look.

Appliances can be positioned side by side or one on top of the other, depending on the brand. Remember to leave enough space around the machines to make loading and unloading easier.

Latest functions

Steam Refresh functions on tumble dryers are an energy-efficient way to neutralise odours, while helping reduce creases between washes. High-temperature steam released in the drum of washing machines helps to eliminate bacteria and viruses attached to clothes.

Anti-stain programmes also allow you to select the specific stain you want to remove, and the washing machine does the rest, ensuring dazzling-clean clothes in every wash. Both heat pump dryers and washing machines have shock absorbers so the machine spins virtually, free of vibrations, with much lower noise levels.

Good to know

Look out for crease care programmes that allow your laundry to gently tumble after the end of the cycle, keeping clothes wrinkle-free until you’re ready to unload. The SensiDry systems available on some tumble dryers will automatically force them to stop when the clothes are dry, saving valuable energy whilst taking good care of your garments.

You may also adjust the intensity of the hot airflow on some dryers to suit the fabric you want to dry, to avoid any shrinkage or over-drying. Water jet functions are a great way of washing away the stains on washing machines’ doors and seals, keeping the drum super-fresh and clean.

What will your laundry appliances cost?

Top-specification washing machines will cost around £1000 to £2000, giving you all the latest AI and AutoDose functionality. There are fewer models on the market when it comes to integrated machines, but you can expect to pay around £900 – but the capacity will be smaller than a freestanding appliance.

A standard tumble dryer does come in a bit cheaper at anything from £500 to £900. The latest drying cabinets will be quite an investment though, costing between £3500 and a whopping £22,000.
