Bedroom curtain ideas

It’s official – the curtain is back. But how can you use sumptuous fabrics in your bedroom design beyond window dressing? We explore the latest decorating ideas using textiles…

Lately, it seems that the love for fabrics has been rekindled, from fabulous kitchen sink skirts to fun shower curtains guarding your bathroom from water spray. So, if you’re looking to welcome this trend in your sleep space, but don’t know where to start, you’ve come to the right place! We’ve rounded up some of our favourite creative – and unexpected – bedroom curtain ideas. Read on…

So, how can you use curtains in your bedroom?

Firstly, characterful curtains with daring pleats are ideal for getting that boutique-hotel look at home. “Bed canopies and curtains that offer the look of an almost four-poster bed create a luxurious, enveloping feel for a wonderful night’s sleep,” says Tori Murphy, founder of the eponymous British textile brand.

What’s more, these fabrics can also help provide privacy. “While ‘nook beds’ are on trend, they’re also practical when trying to unify a space and create fluency between awkward details,” says Harriette Cayzer, director at luxury residential design practice Taylor & Turner.

For example, in one of her projects, the space was small, and the bed positioned next to the window, with the headboard close to the doorway. “The curtain arrangement, although decorative, allows privacy when in bed; here, it also helped to visually section the room so the bed placement didn’t feel uncomfortable,” Harriette explains.

You can use heaps of material on stylish metallic rods, too, to separate the bedroom from the dressing area. “Curtains make a good alternative to wardrobe doors where space is tight. Depending on the choice of fabric, they can also be more cost-effective,” says interior designer Lonika Chande.

Or, if you are renovating your home from scratch (and have ample space and the means to relook at plumbing), why not bring your tub out of the bathroom and into your bedroom? Place it on a waterproof platform to ensure this feature is not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical, and separate it from your main sleep area with the help of stylish curtains – perfect for that boutique hotel-inspired look at home.
