Green kitchens: 10 real projects, from light sage to dark forest

Planning a renovation? If you need a boost of inspiration, we’ve rounded up 10 of our favourite green kitchen case studies, which graced the pages of Kitchens Bedrooms & Bathrooms magazine…

Over time, in my eyes, green became a neutral in kitchen design, being one of the most popular shades for cabinetry. And it’s easy to see why – it’s calming, fresh through its connection to nature, and extremely versatile, looking lush in a contemporary scheme and at home in classic or country-style spaces. And the house tours featured in KBB magazine are testament to that.

From rustic-chic sage, sleek and modern olive, to sumptuous dark forest, here are 10 amazing green kitchen ideas to save for your project…

1. Louise Boyce’s sociable kitchen

Author and content creator Louise Boyce, along with her husband Jesse, renovated their Edwardian home after leaving their busy lives in London behind. “We love hosting and having parties and we are usually the ones to host Christmas and Easter,” she tells us. “There’s nothing we enjoy more than gathering around the kitchen and dancing with our loved ones.”

For the heart of the home, she chose a two-toned kitchen – the island is painted in Card Room Green with the rest of the cabinetry in All White, both by Farrow & Ball. But apart from stunning looks, the space is equally practical for family living. “Everyday, us and the kids sit at the breakfast bar to eat our dinner and to discuss what has happened during the day. It feels like the real hub of the home,” says Louise.

2. A sage green kitchen in south west London

A young family purchased this (originally tired and shabby) Victorian terrace, and enlisted Kitchens by Holloways to help renovate it. By adding an extension over the side-return courtyard and removing the cloakroom, Rob Burnett, the company’s co-founder and director, was able to create a wider kitchen with room for a dining table.

Now, the kitchen is sympathetic to the age of the house but features a modern twist through the blend of traditionally-made cabinetry and streamlined style. As for the colour scheme, soft sage green cabinets are paired with warm pink walls and classic Carrara marble worktops and splashback.

3. A lush palette of leafy shades

After a substantial renovation, homeowner Helen Rowney’s space is now surrounded by full-height glazing, offering glorious views of the garden. The open-plan layout, created by removing an internal wall to make room for a family snug-style living area with sofas, includes classic in-frame bespoke cabinetry painted in a soft shade of green, with an island in a slightly darker shade under the roof lantern.

The L-shaped run of furniture provides storage, a sink zone, and accommodates the AGA cooker with its elegant overmantel. Does this sound just like your style? Explore the ins and outs of this design here.

4. Blending old and new

Homeowners Karen and Stuart Cook wanted to reintroduce period features and heritage colours to honour the 1870 Gothic Victorian home’s aesthetic. Following a recommendation by their architects, Simon Merrony Architects, they commissioned bespoke company Higham Furniture to design and craft a hand-painted Shaker kitchen.

The result? Tall dark teal green Shaker cabinetry with 80mm rails and stiles and quadrant beading, with a showstopping baker’s table island, made from oak stained with Jacobean Oak wood dye.

5. Vibrant green kitchen

Love modern interiors with a twist? What was once a terraced Victorian property with an impractical layout became a fabulous modern home with a connection to the garden and plenty of personality.

The colour scheme of this kitchen is funky, with bold and fun shades of bright blue and green and a speckled worktop that adds texture and contrasts with the organic feel of the wood. Here, you can find out how the space came together.

6. A green Shaker kitchen with rustic charm

The homeowners’ vision was to create an open and airy kitchen designed around the symmetry of the skylights – and that’s exactly what they achieved.

The couple opted for traditional joinery, a plain Shaker style with a rustic feel to complement the house, and marble worktops. As the room is flooded with light, they chose a sumptuous dark green paint for the cabinetry – Farrow & Ball’s Studio Green – complemented by dusky pink walls. Discover how Kasia Piorko of kitchen company Kate Feather created this charming design.

7. Linda Barker’s green kitchen

“My bedroom is dark green, I have emerald green tiles in my dining room, it’s everywhere in this house. And the matt olive green for my cabinets is such a beautiful colour to use. I love it: I wear it; I decorate a lot with it,” interior designer and TV personality Linda Barker tells us about her kitchen refurbishment as part of the works to her grand Georgian house in Yorkshire.

Linda achieved a kitchen that’s both timeless and modern, with a run of floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, finished in recycled timber, a long kitchen island, which includes a hob with integrated downdraft extraction and an overhang for seating, a dedicated drinks area, as well as a back kitchen. 8. A light and bright scheme

The colour of this kitchen was inspired by the stone cottages of the Cotswolds. “We thought soft green looked lovely with the stone,” Emma, the homeowner, explains, “so we went for a similar tone but with more vibrancy.”

She decided to go for a handmade kitchen, designed and made by local furniture maker Grahame Bolton, painted in Little Greene’s Boringdon Green from the National Trust collection, which is nicely contrasted by the reclaimed terracotta flooring. 9. A sleek kitchen with Calacatta Verde marble

The owners of this elegant Roundhouse kitchen wished for a practical and beautiful design that covers their culinary and hosting needs.

Completed as part of a larger house renovation, the finished space now includes zones for cooking, drinking and storage. The large, functional island offers a bigger cooking-preparation area, while the new layout provides better access to the reworked walk-in pantry, too.

However, it’s the Calacatta Verde marble that has brought the room to life. Discover the full story here.

10. A deep green Shaker kitchen

This dark green Shaker kitchen blends traditional and industrial designs with the comforts of home. The Hunter’s Leaf green by Ca’ Pietra of the cabinetry complements the patterned Blackthorn wallpaper by Morris & Co, while the unfinished brass fittings by Armac Martin add a warm and tactile feel.

Top of the homeowners’ priority list were clever storage ideas and a generous marble worktop since they’re keen bakers and pasta makers. See how their vision came to life with the help of H Miller Bros here.
