Tour this luxurious bespoke kitchen with Art Deco glamour

Luxury bespoke kitchen

Built to suit the scale of the house and the beauty of its setting, this impressive bespoke kitchen prompted us to find out more about its design…

Set in a Yorkshire village with far-reaching views across fields and ancient woodlands, this impressive six-bedroom new build house is in a beautiful location – with a beautiful kitchen to match. KBB journo Amelia Thorpe has got all the details…

“We carefully designed the layout to create an open-plan kitchen as the focal point of the house,” says Natalie Richards, interior stylist, who worked with architect Sam Hough, both from property developer Vogue Homes, on the project. “Our main objective was to design a kitchen-living space that is timeless and reflects a sense of Art Deco elegance.”

Requiring completely bespoke kitchen cabinetry to achieve the look they wanted, Natalie and Sam commissioned Todd James Handcrafted Kitchens and Bedrooms to produce the kitchen, after following up a recommendation. Since the company makes each of its kitchens from start to finish in its own workshop in Cheshire, managing director Todd Heywood wasn’t fazed.

Hand-beaded doors and drawers, handsome corner posts to the island and elegant overmantel, all contribute to the individuality of the bespoke kitchen design.

Designing the kitchen

Along with Selena Parsons, Todd James’ lead designer, work got started on the design – a process which from drawing to completion was two years in the making. “They wanted a grand design suited to the generous proportions of the open-plan room and on a scale that would make it the hub of the ground floor for entertaining,” says Todd.

Measuring nearly five metres in length, the island is topped in magnificent Fantasy Brown granite, its natural veins of rich brown, blue grey and creamy white creating a striking combination. “The huge, heavy pieces of granite had to be craned in through the back of the house, then manoeuvred into position by a team of about 20 of us,” he recalls.

The granite is finished with a triple ogee edge profile to accentuate its grandeur. It also complements the hand-beaded cupboard doors and drawer fronts, painted in a soft cream colour.

“We designed the furniture to have a touch of beaded embellishment, inspired by Art Deco style,” says Todd. “The room needed character, especially in such a large space.”

The same granite has been used for the splashback behind the induction hob, framed in a bespoke overmantel. “By choosing bookmatched granite, we accentuated the beauty of the stone and drew the eye to another stunning feature.”

An L-shaped arrangement of cabinetry on the walls around the island houses built-in appliances, making the kitchen as practical as it is elegant.

The dining area and wine room

The kitchen leads on to a spacious dining area, complete with home bar. Made to match the style of the bespoke kitchen cabinetry in the rest of the room but painted in a soft shade of warm, dusty pink, it also features glamorous touches such as an antiqued mirror splashback and glass shelves illuminated by built-in shelf lighting. “This makes an inviting area, perfect for relaxing with friends and enjoying drinks in the evening,” he says.

Todd also designed a custom wine room, meant to keep bottles in optimum condition. Set behind a glazed steel-framed door, so that the attractive contents can be glimpsed from the kitchen, the wine room features dark-stained oak, angled shelves and cross racking for wine bottle storage and display.

“Integrated strip lighting illuminates the shelves, but also softly highlights the natural grain of the oak and enhances the luxurious feel of the room,” he explains.

The laundry room

To create a cohesive look, the laundry room includes cabinetry and granite to match the kitchen. It is a practical space with broom cupboard, housing an extra freezer as well as laundry appliances, and even an integrated laundry chute so that clothes can be sent directly here, from the bedrooms on the upper floor, ready for washing. It also includes a rail for hanging shirts after ironing and a sink for hand washing and other chores.

“Our aim was to make this room efficient, with a carefully considered and good-looking design that makes tasks more enjoyable and satisfying,” he says. “The success of this design is not just its elegant grandeur, but also the smooth connectivity between spaces,” continues Todd.

“There is a sense of seamless flow that makes it easy to move from preparing dinner to selecting a bottle of wine or sitting with friends to relax – the ideal gathering place at the heart of this home.”
